一个普通的英国家庭，家里是什么样子？

大家好！很高兴今天有机会带领大家参观一个英国的家庭。英国有一句谚语：家是一个人的城堡。我相信大家一定很有兴趣到这些城堡里参观一下，尤其重要的是，在我的带领下，你不会只是走马观花地兜一圈，因为我会随时比较英国家庭和中国家庭有什么不同，以及这些不同折射出哪些东西方文化差异。

我们今天要参观的这个家庭是一个极普通的英国家庭。说它普通，首先房子很普通，不是豪宅；其次，家庭成员普通，普通的工薪阶层。我先介绍一下这所房子的基本情况，然后再带领大家从内、外两方面进行参观。

基本情况

这所房子位于英格兰中部城市诺丁汉市郊区的一个小镇的中心，两层楼外加三楼一个阁楼，准确地说是两层半吧，实用面积100平方米左右。房子的主人是一对老年夫妇，男主人是邮递员，女主人是纺织厂的职工。这样的双职工家庭放在中国城市应该说是最最普通的家庭。他们现在都已经退休了。房子是在几十年前买下的，当时的价格是9000英镑，现在的价格估计在15万英镑左右，按照目前的汇率折合人民币225万元。英国的物价高是全世界有名的，一个小镇100平方米的房子要人民币200多万。

外 观

大家看图1，这一排的房子都算不上中国人观念中的别墅，最多是那种连体别墅。尽管前后都有花园，但是花园都很小。从图1后院的照片看，第一眼我们就发现有两点不同：第一，房顶上天线林立。为什么有这么多英国人还需要天线呢？这是由于在英国，有线电视收费比较高，英国的许多家庭没有有线电视，所以天线对英国人仍然重要。大家可能感到很惊讶吧，实际上，就是无线电视节目也是收费的，需要事先办一个接收许可证，然后定期交钱。电视台会不时派出一辆像电影《永不消逝的电波》里面那样的侦察车，如果发现谁家没有交钱还在看电视，那就要罚他的款。第二，他们的房子还有烟囱。请注意，烟囱不是用来烧饭的，而是用于壁炉生火。不过，现在英国家庭都有暖气，壁炉也就成了一个纯粹的装饰品。

现在我们来到这户人家的大门口。与绝大多数中国人相比，英国人是非常注重房屋的外观的。花园的草要定期割、树要定期修自不必说，门窗还要用鲜花点缀，目标是让行人赏心悦目。我们中国人家里很讲究，进门先要脱鞋，自己家里保持得整洁，可是公共走廊谁也不去管。屋里屋外天壤之别。

大家特别注意，英国的房子和中国的房子外观上的最大差别，我认为是它们没有防盗门和防盗窗。从图2这张照片可以清楚地看到，无论是打破门上这块玻璃还是窗户玻璃，你都可以轻而易举地进去。

To meet Waterloo（倒霉，受毁灭性打击，灭顶之灾） 滑铁卢是一代天骄拿破仑遭受残败的地方。

遭遇滑铁卢，对一个人来说，后果不堪设想。无怪据说二战期间，在准备诺曼底反攻时，温斯顿·丘吉尔和随员冒雨去某地开会，其随员因路滑而摔了一跤，脱口说一句“To meet Waterloo！”丘吉尔竟联想到拿破仑兵败滑铁卢的典故，恼怒地斥责他：“胡说！我要去凯旋门呢！” It's Greek to me.（我不知道） 英国人一般都不懂希腊语。

这句话的直译是：对于我这是希腊语。自然是不明白的意思。

Greek Kalends（幽默，诙谐方式表达的永远不） Kalends是罗马日历的第一天。古希腊不用罗马日历，永远不会有这一天。

Castle in Spain（西班牙城堡，幻想，梦想。相当于汉语中的空中楼阁） 中世纪某一时期，西班牙是一个颇富浪漫色彩的国家，这句成语是和Castle in air（空中城堡）相齐名的。

Set the Thames on fire（火烧泰晤士河，这是何等伟大的壮举） 但是这句成语经常是反其义应用，指那些人对某事只是夸下海口，而不是真正想去做。 From China to Peru（从中国到秘鲁） 它的意义非常明白，指从世界的这一边到世界的那一边，相当于汉语的远隔重洋。

Between Scylla and Charybdis（锡拉和卡津布迪斯之间———在两个同样危险的事物之间：一个人逃出一种危险，而又落入另一种危险） 锡拉是传说中生活在意大利岩石的怪兽，卡津布迪斯是住在海峡中一端经常产生旋涡的另一个怪兽。水手为了躲避其中一个的危害，而常又落入另一个灾难。

意大利这一方的海角叫凯尼斯（Caenys），西西里岛那一方的海角叫皮罗鲁姆（Pelorum）。 Spoil Egyptians（掠夺埃及———迫使敌人提供自己所需要的东西） 源于圣经：上帝答应摩西，埃及人必须借给以色列他们所需要的东西。

Do in Rome as Romans Do（在罗马，就按罗马人的方式办） 和我们的入乡随俗的意思一样。 Carry Coals to Newcastle（把煤送到纽卡斯尔） 把某种东西送到一个人们根本不需要的地方。

纽卡斯尔盛产煤，送煤到那里，岂不是多此一举。有趣的是法国也有类似的成语“del'eau a la riviere（送水到大河里）。”
