Everyone in the hall can hear clearly.这两个简单句看似融合，实际上结构松散，如果将原简单句合并为复合句：His voice is so loud that it can be heard clearly by everyone in the hall.这样句子就环环相扣、紧凑有力、自然流畅。

由此可见，合并句子练习可以帮助学生锻炼英语思维，写出地道的英语句子，使英语句子由简单变为简洁，练习把简单句或是零散的句式运用各种技巧（如非谓语动词、从句等）合并为一个紧凑简洁的英语句子是一种不错的练习形式。（2）拓展句子。

从理论上来说，一个句子可以无限拓展，但实际运用中应当适可而止。定语或状语的表意功能或者说交际功能就是丰富句子的含义。

给句子增加修饰语，一方面是为了写出好的句子或者复杂的句子，另一方面是表意和交际的需要。
