Traffic congestion returns to Beijing

China's capital has returned to its original level of congestion after two months of traffic restrictions aimed at improving air quality for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Reuters reports.

Although the traffic regulations do not officially expire until September 27, the number of cars on the road had already increased to its original level, the report said. Restrictions will continue on government-owned cars, which make up 10% of Beijing's three million vehicles.

Factory pollution is also expected to increase this month as businesses scramble to make their yearly quotas after two months of

enforced closures and emissions restrictions.

Beijing is ranked among the world's most polluted cities, prompting discussion about the future of pollution regulation should be kept in

Having special lanes reserved for bicycles and motorcycles should encourage more people to use bicycles and motorcycles instead of cars. As a long-term solution, extensive subway, or surface monorail systems should be built for all the major cities。
