Microsoft CEO touts new Windows tablets vs iPadSEATTLE, Jul 12 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer touted new tablet-style devices running the Windows 7 operating system from about 20 manufacturers at a conference on Monday, underlining the giant software company's eagerness to counter the explosion of interest in Apple Inc's iPad. New Windows-powered tablet or slate devices -- small, hand-held, wireless computers -- are in the pipeline from Acer Inc, Dell Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Toshiba Corp, Sony Corp and a dozen other PC makers, Ballmer said at the company's annual partner conference in Washington, D.C., which was webcast. "This year, one of the most important things that we will do in the smart device category is really push forward with Windows 7-based slates," said Ballmer. "This is a terribly important area for us." Apple's iPad, launched in April, has already sold more than 2 million units worldwide, and threatens to take customers away from Microsoft-dominated desktop computing. Ballmer did not mention Hewlett-Packard Co, the world's No. 1 PC maker, which has said it plans to build slate devices running the operating system devised by Palm Inc, which HP bought this year. However, HP's logo did appear on a slide listing PC makers working on slates which was displayed as Ballmer spoke. At the same conference, Microsoft announced that online auction firm eBay Inc, tech services company Fujitsu Ltd and PC maker Dell are among the companies testing Microsoft's new Windows Azure platform appliance, which lets customers implement Microsoft's newest "cloud" server technology in its own data centers. Microsoft is heavily emphasizing "cloud" services at the conference, essentially helping companies manage their data and computing power -- and those of their customers -- over the Internet. Microsoft shares were up almost 2 percent at $24.75 on Nasdaq.。

Many Chinese people in his own way began English vocabulary words and sentences, such as Smilence such similar Brangelina (brad Pitt and Angelina jolie of husband and wife called the) "t self-created". Also some of the words in Chinese the pun literal translation come over, cause the effect of misalignment and interesting, such as "We two who and who?" (we two who and who?) , "No wind, No waves." (No smoke without fire), "If you want money, I have No. If you want life, I have one." (want money No, want life one), "American Chinese not enough" (the ointment). 许多中国人开始按自己的方式自创英语词汇和句子,如Smilence这样类似Brangelina(布拉德·皮特和安吉丽娜·朱莉夫妻的合称)的“自创合成词”。也有些词把汉语里的俏皮话直译过来,造成错位和有趣的效果,比如“We two who and who?”(咱俩谁跟谁?),“No wind, no waves.”(无风不起浪),“If you want money, I have no. If you want life, I have one.”(要钱没有,要命一条),“American Chinese not enough”(美中不足)。新华社报道称这是“中国式俏皮话丰富了英语”--而这是一种创新的中式英语。

Britain Enters Final Day of Campaigning Before Elections Britain's top party leaders are taking full advantage of their last day of campaigning before Britons go to the polls. Late Wednesday night, Labor leader Gordon Brown visited steel workers on an overnight shift. "I don't need to tell you that this election is about the future," said Brown. "It's about the future of our industry, the future of our jobs, the future of our young people." Mr. Brown is facing a tight election. The Conservative Party, led by David Cameron, has topped the latest opinion polls. And, the Liberal Democrats -- traditionally a marginalized party in what has largely been a two-party system -- are scoring high in opinion polls.Rodney Barker is a political academic and professor at the London School of Economics. "The three candidates have been up to making themselves as busy as possible," explained Barker. "David Cameron, the Conservative leader, so visible that he's even worked through the night -- he hasn't slept." Barker says this last day of campaigning is crucial, because so many Britons still have not made up their mind. A survey published by the research group ComRes Tuesday said 2.5 million people who say they are certain to vote say they are still undecided who to vote for and more than a third of voters said it was "quite possible" they would change their mind on who to vote for by the time the polls open Thursday morning. Rodney Barker says it is all up in the air."The one thing which one can say about this election -- and we haven't been able to say this for any election within living memory -- is that the only certain thing is that we cannot predict the outcome, even on the day before the poll," added Barker. The ComRes poll shows the Conservatives winning 37 percent of votes, Labor on 29 percent and the Liberal Democrats on 26 percent. With the votes split this way, no single party would win a majority of seats in parliament. In that case, the shape of Britain's future government will depend on coalitions. The balance is likely to be tipped by the Liberal Democrats, but so far their leader, Nick Clegg, has refused to say whether his party would side with the Conservatives or Labor. Barker says what this means is that it could be weeks before the composition of Britain's future government becomes clear. "Even when we know the result of the election, we may not know what the result is in terms of government -- who will successfully make a deal with who to make what sort of government," noted Barker. If no single party is able to win a majority of parliament seats, current Prime Minister Gordon Brown would have the right to stay in office until a new government can be formed.呵呵,这是2010年5月6日的英语新闻,来自VOA,希望对你有帮助,呵呵。
