1 In China as in the US, one can easily give up the career of a language teacher to become a lawyer or a businessman. I, however, gave up a promising legal and business career to become a language teacher, but I have never regretted it. In fact, the more I teach, the more committed I am to teaching. But not just teaching. Having battled with China's traditional mode of teaching for several years, I now would like to help improve teaching in China by introducing new and more effective instructional technology and media into the country. For that, I would like to pursue an advanced degree in education in your country. Now an English teacher at the training center of the China National Container Corporation, I graduated in 1995 from the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, where I majored in business law. At this highly respected higher-learning institution, I received broad training that was both rigorous and vigorous. After four years of undergraduate studies, the strong logic inherent in law translated into strong logic in my thinking. With the knowledge and skills I attained in the law program, I boast the kind of intellectual maturity that would help me whatever I do. But law was never my first choice for a profession. Starting from my high school days, I always dreamed of becoming a teacher. In the second year of high school, we once had to write an essay on the topic “what do you want to do when you grow up”. I proudly wrote, “I want to be a teacher!” But my parents shattered my dream by insisting that I pursue another profession. My father, an engineer with a Ph. D. degree, and my mother, a university teacher of English, had their reasons. Chinese teachers, particularly those teaching at the primary and secondary levels, are poorly paid and begrudgingly respected. Being young and inexperienced in the world, I acceded to their wishes when I was choosing my major for the university. But my passion for teaching was not to be stifled forever. Giver any opportunity, it would burst out. Upon graduation with an LL. B. Degree, I first took up the position of a supervisor with the China National Container Corporation in charge of its Overseas Sales Department. As the job entailed frequent translation and interpretation between Chinese and English, I persisted in improving my English proficiency by attending various training courses and learning it on my own. My command of the foreign tongue became so good that, after about one year, I began to teach it to my colleagues on a full-time basis at the company's training center. After a huge detour, my career finally got back on track. What makes teaching so enjoyable to me is that it is a learning experience. I enjoy it the most when my students ask difficult questions, particularly questions that I have to think long and hard to answer. I also enjoy posing questions to students, but my questions are never intended to intimidate the students or even test their knowledge but rather designed to stimulate their minds. In the constant exchange of questions and answers, students and teachers improve themselves alike to the credit of the old Chinese saying: To teach is to learn. In my three years of teaching, I really have learned a great deal. One of the things I have learned is the ability to not only deal with but also strike an accord with people of different backgrounds. My students at the training center are all adults accomplished in a variety of roles and professions. In most cases, they are older than I am. While I stand as their equals, I have served as their mentors and role models the same way as most teachers do their students. By so doing, I have won their trust and confidence in what I teach, which has helped to make my teaching powerful and effective. To take full advantage of my teaching skills, I started in October 1996 to teach English and other subjects at the primary school I attended when I was a child. As the children I teach are at the age when I studied here, I am particularly sensitive to their needs and appreciative of their potential. Together with other teachers, I designed various training programs in calligraphy, art, writing, mental calculation, and English, programs that combine learning with entertainment. The kids n my class are now learning more and faster thanks to the fun they find everyday in my programs. Entertainment is, however, by no means just a ploy I use to sweeten the bitter pill of learning for the children, but rather has its own 。

Personal Statement I am an overseas student from China. I am applying for a Mathematics course at University.Mathematics is my favourite subject and it's the most wonderful thing: For any person in the world, even if he/she doesn't learn about Literature, Physics, Biology, Art, Law, (perhaps he/she doesn't even know who is the President of his/her country.) There is one thing he/she must know: Mathematics. Everything relates to Mathematics; nothing can work without it.Although, to me, Mathematics is a wonderful thing, lots of people have suggested that I choose another subject to study at University. Because in their mind there is no job that needs Mathematics as advanced as University Mathematics except researching or teaching. But for me, Mathematics is part of my way of life. It's a key that could open the door into my dream!I want to have my own enterprise. I need to have good logical judgment to discern what is an opportunity or a crisis. I need to have different ideas to find a new way; I need to calculate what will happen in the future Lots of things I need and all of those I can find in Mathematics. Why not choose it? There is no reason for me to change my decision.I will describe my study as an exploration for knowledge. As an explorer I have good endurance but it doesn't mean I like to waste time. I like to ask if I don't know: I think of teachers as having the map that could show me which is the right way. It will not let me get lost in exploration. As an explorer I have adventurous but this doesn't mean I am rash. I like to find out different ways. There is not only one way you can go to a destination. I could discover lots of things during my exploration. It will help me to break new ground. As an explorer I have my own special skill. I like to know why something works. It's not just to help me to solve the same style problem more quickly and easily. I could infer further development when I know the basic theory. It gives me the ability to face the future by myself.I left my parents to study from the age of 11 and I have now lived alone in England for about 2 years. I feel so lucky that I can study in the UK. In China we have no chance to choose what we do or do not want to learn. Study in China is very boring for me. But now I can study the things I am interested in, so I am enjoying my study very much.Every week I drive to a school and teach the children Chinese. It's quite hard for me because this is my first time as a teacher. Sometimes I like to read fiction about magic and myth. I enjoy escaping to a different world. At the moment I am a Dreamer. I imagine all sorts of things: What is the past? What is the future? What is the truth? Perhaps Mathematics will give me the answer. Then I shall become a Thinker. I hope.。

Think about the decisions you have made that led to your current position. Past: What choices have you made that led to your current position present: why is astern mba necessary at this point in your life? future: what is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern school I have always desired a career that requires innovation, educated risk, and foresight. I learned to respect these qualities from my father, a Lebanese immigrant who worked for years to create his own business. Through his example, I have seen firsthand the advantages and challenges of self-employment--the rewards to be gained and the total commitment required. My goal is to create a business based on my own ideas and efforts, and have made decisions aimed at bringing this dream into fruition .After graduating from college, I accepted a position as the manager of an established German restaurant in San Francisco. I had been the evening manager there for nearly two years while attending college, and knew that the restaurant was struggling. For several years, high overhead costs and poor marketing had brought revenue to a minimum. I saw the position as an intriguing challenge; I knew I could dramatically increase the restaurant' s profitability. Immediately after accepting the position in July of 1995,I addressed the most significant problem: high overhead from over staffing, food waste, and unnecessary purchases of supplies. I lowered each of these expenses while maintaining the restaurant' s quality and efficiency. My next target was marketing. Inexpensive advertisement in local newspapers, attractive signage, and Internet postings brought in many new customers. In the meantime, I took control of the accounting, eliminating the need for independent help. The increased revenue and decreased spending had an immediate effect. At the end of 1996, the restaurant reported a profit for the first time in six years. I remained with the business until it was sold in 1997, monitoring these changes in order to provide lasting improvement. Although the position made me realize that the restaurant business did not appeal to me, those two years reaffirmed my desire to operate my own business. I had not abandoned my education during that time; while working at the restaurant, I had taken real estate courses in the evening and passed the California State Broker exam in 1996. My brother and I launched our own property management company in April of 1996,and it quickly grew. We currently have seven commercial properties under management. Our responsibilities include leasing, accounting, and property maintenance. In 1997, I began working as a broker with a commercial real estate company, largely to gain the knowledge of retail to improve the leasing and sales division of my company. I am currently employed in a sales position with a private business bank in San Francisco. I was hired to bring business into the bank, which rarely advertises, prefer ring to attract business primarily from referrals. My responsibilities include interacting with potential clients, selling loans and deposits, and account maintenance. This job has given me better understanding of sales and finance, which is crucial to the success of any business. Although my ultimate goal is to grow our property management company into a full time business, these positions in other industries have been invaluable learning aids. Property management requires an extensive knowledge of real estate, banking, accounting and sales. I now feel confident that I have gained valuable experience with my work. However, I know that earning a graduate degree will further enhance the skills I need to develop a viable company. The Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University will allow me to learn from the finest teachers, interact with the brightest students, and experience one of the top graduate programs in the United States. I can only anticipate the invaluable knowledge and training I will gain from being a part of this program. Although my work experience has been extremely important, the NYU Stern School of Business will be equally as educational. It will allow me to incorporate my experiences with other equally ambitious students, and to broaden my goals, ideas and perspectives. A graduate degree in Management and 。
